Centre de la Mémoire d’Oradour sur Glane – Village Martyr

Oradour sur Glane

Visit the village of Oradour sur Glane, which was destroyed in the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre on 10 June 1944. Troops of the German 2nd Waffen SS armoured division raided the village in retaliation, herded the men into granaries and executed them. They herd the women and children into the imposing church where there was a box of explosives. When women and children tried to escape from the church, they were immediately shot. Then the rest of the village was also shot, 642 people thus killed in three hours and the village was totally destroyed.

It was the largest Nazi massacre of civilians in France, probably also the largest in Western Europe, and became the symbol of Nazi barbarism for the French. After the war, the village near the ruins was rebuilt. It is extremely impressive to visit this village there to get a taste of history, you experience an indescribable feeling ven serene silence and tranquillity while it immediately makes a big impression on your feelings and emotions.

The village is easy to visit for young and old alike, admission to this open-air museum is free and it is only 60km from “Le Domaine du Moulin Neuf 1605”. There is a charge to enter the museum inside, but it's worth it!
